Create awareness and improve understanding of animal trypanosomosis to ensure stakeholder’s commitment

Last update: 23 May 2022

Animal trypanosomosis, despite the considerable impact it has on the continent’s agricultural development, remains a neglected disease. This is due to a number of factors. On the ground, the communities most affected by the disease are poor livestock keepers, mostly in rural areas, who have insufficient knowledge of the disease and limited access to diagnosis tools and veterinary assistance. On a larger scale, the risk of spread to other continents, chiefly Europe, is underestimated despite clear warning signs.

Through its awareness-rising activities along the value chain and advocacy with decision-makers at the national level, a strong commitment for the progressive control of animal trypanosomosis can be expected, supported as the project is by the direct involvement of veterinary authorities and FAO, and endorsed by international organisations such as OIE, WHO and IAEA, with the full engagement of the African Union. In addition, the reassessment of the burden of animal trypanosomosis will generate factual evidence and rekindle donors’ interest, ensuring a lasting effect of COMBAT’s actions.
