The available estimates of animal trypanosomosis burden in Africa are out-of-date and they based on unclear methodologies.  Little data is also available of disease burden at the national and local levels.

COMBAT will re-assess the burden of animal trypanosomosis at the continental level by using the recent data provided by the continental atlas. In selected countries the burden will also be assessed at the national as well as at the local level in priority areas for interventions.

These estimates of disease burden will inform a more cost-effective targeting of control activities in the field, while at the same time strengthen the commitment of decision makers to tackle this important disease.
