In September 2022 at the end of the first 12 months of the COMBAT project, a new stage will be reached, as the first achievements of the project will have taken place according to the deadlines of the work plan. The project partners will meet to assess the progress of the project, capitalize on successes, identify potential difficulties, and plan measures to meet the next objectives. The three-day meeting will take place at the CIRAD campus (Campus de Lavalette) in Montpellier.

The first entomological training workshop of the COMBAT project was held in Gran Canaria, 16-20 May 2022. Partners from the University of Las Palmas Gran Canaria (ULPGC) were trained to the trapping and identification of hematophagous flies, and, to the comparison of attracting devices using Latin squares by two entomologists from CIRAD. It will help them carry out surveys on hematophagous flies and proceed evaluation of new traps.

Animal diseases: a risk to food security in Africa

Livestock production in Africa is severely limited by parasitic diseases such as animal trypanosomosis. The COMBAT project will provide stakeholders and beneficiaries with a framework and innovations to effectively tackle this disease. You can join the community of animal trypanosomosis control for livestock development in Africa.

Since the start-up phase, the COMBAT project researchers have been communicating through public mass media, in order to explain to the general public the need for and the stakes of the fight against animal trypanosomiasis. The article signed by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and CIRAD published in Spanish in the newspaper "The Conversation" sheds light on the reasons, objectives and means of the COMBAT project in the fight against sleeping sickness.

After more than a year of preparation devoted to the design, preparation and presentation of the animal trypanosomiasis research project, all the researchers who have contributed to this tremendous effort meet for the first time, on the occasion of the official start of the COMBAT project in September 2021. Holding the meeting in videoconference mode did not spoil the enthusiasm and fervor brought by the 21 European and African participating organizations
