CIRDES has organised a training workshop on diagnostic techniques (parasitological, serological and molecular) for trypanosomoses for the French-speaking partners of the COMBAT project.

From January 15 to 26, 2024, the Centre International de Recherche-Développement sur l'Elevage en zone Subhumide (CIRDES) organized a training session on standard diagnostic techniques applied to African animal trypanosomoses (AAT), both in vertebrate hosts and vectors, for the benefit of the COMBAT project's French-speaking partners. This training is part of the activities of the 4th pillar "Capacities and commitment".

One of CIRDES' areas of activity is capacity building through training and transfer of innovative agricultural technologies.

It was with this in mind that the COMBAT project, of which CIRDES is a partner, organized this workshop.

A total of twelve technicians, some from COMBAT partners - Institut de Recherche en Elevage pour le Développement (IRED, Chad) and Direction Générale de l'Entomologie et de la Lutte contre les Maladies Animales à vecteurs (DGELMA, ex-IBD, Burkina Faso) -  others from local collaborating but non-partner institutions - Université Nazi Boni (UNB) and Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS) de Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) - benefited from this training. The technicians were thus able to acquire or improve certain fundamental and applied skills linked to trypanosome diagnostics, both in the laboratory and in the field. The course covered methods for diagnosing trypanosome species using parasitological, molecular and serological tests in the laboratory, as well as activities involving the trapping, identification and sexing of tsetse flies and mechanical vectors of TAA in the CIRDES insectarium and in the field.
