General description

The Ministry for Animal Resources and Fisheries (Ministère des Ressources Animales et Halieutiques) is responsible for the livestock sector, with the following functions: (i) traditional livestock support activities through training and extension for producers; (ii) development of pastoral areas, promotion of feed-processing industries, and support to fodder production, to spur intensive animal production; (iii) strengthening of animal health infrastructure and services; (iv) improvement of quality control of animal products; (v) support of the processing industries of livestock by-products: food products, hides and skins, and manure of animal origin; and (vi) identification of stable and remunerative markets for livestock products.

In 2000, African Heads of State and Government decided to step up efforts to control tsetse and trypanosomosis by creating the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC). In this context, PATTEC Burkina Faso in the first phase of its programme (2006-2013) succeeded in reducing tsetse density and trypanosomosis prevalence in the target area by 95 to 99 %. Since 2014, PATTEC has become a branch of the Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources, named Insectarium de Bobo-Dioulasso-Campagne d’Eradication de la mouche Tsé-tsé et de la Trypanosomose (IBD-CETT, using the short name IBD in this proposal). The goal of IBD is to promote the application of modern and environment-friendly approaches and technologies to improve nutrition, food security and public health by creating areas that are permanently free from tsetse flies and trypanosomosis in Burkina Faso. As such, IBD conducts vector and trypanosomosis control activities and develops tools and strategies for the improvement of animal health in tsetse fly areas in collaboration with the decentralized structures of the Ministry.

Role in the project

  • In WP3, IBD will complete, enhance and update the national atlas of AT and its vectors in Burkina Faso. This activity will include field investigations in areas were data are not available, the inclusion of data on T. evansi infection (surra) and the collection of up-to-date information in priority intervention areas to inform control activities. In WP3 the national surveillance system for AT and its vectors will also be strengthened, including the development of technical capacities, and AT awareness campaigns.
  • In WP4, together with CIRDES (Burkina Faso), IBD will assess the socio-economic burden of AT at national and local level.
  • In WP5, a national strategy and the related implementation roadmap will be developed for improved decisionmaking in AT control in Burkina Faso. Awareness campaign for the adoption of PCP will be conducted.
  • In WP6, IBD will train two MSc students and 1 PhD student.
  • In WP7, IBD will be involved through coordination activities, in relation with the coordinator, write scientific and financial reports, and participate to dissemination of COMBAT results through scientific publications and participation in international congresses.
